BTS skips 2027 Grammy Awards in protest of new Asian Pop category FAST-MOVING

On July 29 2026 the seven members of BTS posted coordinated messages on Instagram stating they will not submit any music for the 69th Grammy Awards, scheduled for February 7 2027. The group said they want music heard and loved without being divided by region or language.

Their decision follows the Recording Academy’s June 16 2026 announcement of five new Grammy categories, one of which is “Best Asian Pop Music Performance.” The category recognises performances from Asian markets that contain a “meaningful use” of at least one Asian language, a criterion that would exclude most of BTS’s English‑language material. BTS framed the move as a protest against what they view as segregation of Asian artists.

BTS’s comeback album **Arirang**, released in March 2026 after the members completed military service, topped the Billboard 200 for two consecutive weeks, and its lead single “Swim” reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The group has been nominated for Grammy Awards five times but has never won. The Recording Academy has not commented on the boycott, and the Grammy submission window remains open until August 21 2026.
