BUAP analyzes ethical use of generative AI in research
The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) held a conference titled ‘Generative AI in Research: tools, publication, and ethics’ to discuss best practices and the impact of artificial intelligence on knowledge development.
Amira del Rayo Flores Urbina, BUAP’s Vice Rector of Research and Postgraduate Studies, emphasized the need for responsible AI use. She noted that the debate should extend beyond who uses the tools to include where they are produced, how training data is controlled, how computing centers are protected, and who establishes the norms and benefits from the technology.
Carlos Manuel Estévez-Bretón, a global consultant for Elsevier, addressed the challenges of modern research, including information overload and inefficient searching. He noted that while global knowledge is estimated at 64.2 zettabytes, it is fragmented: 4% is on the internet, 90% is in local files and computers, and 6% is on the dark web.
