BUAP Molecular Infectology Laboratory develops practical diagnostic tools

The Molecular Infectology Laboratory (LIM) at the BUAP Faculty of Chemical Sciences is focusing on applying molecular science to address practical real-world problems. Led by researcher Nidia Gary Pazos Salazar, the laboratory conducts research on viruses and bacteria to explain infectious and cellular processes.

Key research areas include the development of molecular diagnostic tests for clinical, veterinary, and food safety applications. Notable projects currently underway include the diagnosis of hepatitis A in food, the development of vaccines for cattle, and a test designed to simultaneously identify nine molecular targets responsible for respiratory infections, including five viruses and three bacteria.

Other research focuses on viral infections related to cancer, coronavirus detection in bats, and potential therapies for lung cancer. The laboratory maintains collaborations with several institutions, including the IMSS Biomedical Research Center of the East, the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, and the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. The facility also serves as a training ground for between 10 and 13 undergraduate and graduate students.
