BUAP Student Proposes Agave‑Waste Fibers for Sustainable Textiles

Azul Cristal Urbano Hernández, a fourth‑semester biotechnology student at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), presented a biotechnological platform to turn agave residues into natural fibers. The method uses an eutectic, biocompatible solvent made of lactic acid and choline chloride to separate cellulose from lignin, and the solvent is recovered through controlled carbon‑dioxide injection.

The extracted fibers can be processed into non‑woven textiles for automotive filters, acoustic insulation, construction mesh, and medical items such as face masks. The remaining pulp may be converted into biocombustible fuel. The proposal was showcased at the First Textile Sustainability Contest (FEST‑TEX 2026) organized by BUAP’s Faculty of Engineering.

Mexico generates millions of tonnes of agro‑industrial residues each year, including agave, pineapple, banana and sugarcane waste, which currently pose environmental hazards. By converting this waste into value‑added materials, the project aims to reduce pollution and create new sustainable products for multiple industries.
