BUAP student presents Atoyac River research at Mexican Congress

Chareni Espíndola Sánchez, a tenth-semester biology student at the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), will present a scientific proposal at the 'Voces del Futuro MX' Youth Forum. The event is scheduled for October 30 at the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico City.

Espíndola Sánchez's research focuses on the upper basin of the Atoyac River. She proposes using biomonitoring via aquatic macroinvertebrates to assess ecological conditions. She argues that while current water quality assessments rely primarily on physicochemical tests, biological indicators—such as species that only survive in healthy environments versus those that tolerate pollution—provide a more comprehensive view of ecosystem health.

Her proposal aims to integrate biological, socioeconomic, and physicochemical data to assist policymakers in water resource management and conservation. Her thesis work also examines the intersection of science and public policy by analyzing industrial activity, agriculture, and livestock statistics in regions including Cuautlancingo, San Martín Texmelucan, Huejotzingo, and Puebla.
