BUAP's Lafragua Library preserves significant historical collections
The José María Lafragua Library at BUAP, located in the Carolino Building, holds one of Mexico’s most significant bibliographic collections. The archive serves as a vital resource for historical research and cultural memory.
Key items in the collection include a Roman Breviary (Breviarium Romanum) dating to approximately 1356, which has been the subject of codicological study by specialists such as Dr. Leonardo Magionami from the University of Siena. The library also houses two colonial codices and a collection of 17 incunables—typographic products created between 1450 and 1500—which represents one of the largest such collections in Puebla.
Additionally, the library preserves eight 16th-century Mexican prints and various 'editio princeps' (first editions) spanning from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Library Director Mercedes Isabel Salomón Salazar noted that while these works are treated as heritage assets with restricted access, researchers can access specific items through a formal request and registration process.
