Buc-ee's faces trademark lawsuit and food waste allegations
The convenience store chain Buc-ee's is facing legal and social media scrutiny regarding its business practices. In Ohio, the company has filed a trademark lawsuit against Beaver's Mini Mart, a long-standing local business in Beavercreek. Buc-ee's alleges that the Mini Mart's cartoon beaver mascot, characterized by "wide eyes and a smile" and the predominant use of red, is too similar to its own branding and could cause customer confusion.
Separately, the company is facing allegations of significant food waste. Following discussions on social media platforms like Reddit, current and former employees have claimed that large quantities of prepared food are routinely discarded rather than donated. Some allegations suggest that items such as brisket sandwiches, banana pudding, and breakfast kolaches are thrown away due to labeling mistakes, presentation issues, or simply because they can no longer be sold. One unverified claim from a former employee's partner suggested a single location could discard between 500 and 700 pounds of food daily. Buc-ee's has not publicly responded to these specific allegations.
