Bucharest adds ninth street cooling tunnel amid heatwave

The Bucharest City Hall announced the installation of a ninth street‑level cooling tunnel at Piața Sălăjan, bringing the total to nine across the capital. The tunnels are located at Piața Unirii (two sites), Piața Universității near the National Theatre, Calea Victoriei near Valter Mărăcineanu, Calea Giulești 38, Șoseaua Alexandriei nr. 5 – Piața Rahova, Calea Victoriei at the Central Army House, Șoseaua Mihai Bravu – Obor Market, and the new site at Piața Sălăjan.

Each “street shower” operates daily from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., with illumination continuing through the night until 5:00 a.m. The facilities are intended to alleviate discomfort during the current heatwave, when temperatures have reached 34 °C and forecasts predict peaks of 37‑38 °C. The city also highlighted the availability of over 100 public water fountains and climate shelters to further support residents during the extreme heat.

These measures are part of Bucharest’s broader response to the high‑temperature period, aiming to provide immediate relief for citizens in heavily trafficked areas.
