Bucharest begins controlled demolition of Rahova apartment building

Controlled demolition has begun on floors 5 through 8 of an eight-story apartment building in the Rahova district of Bucharest. The operation, described by Bucharest City Hall as an exceptional first for Romania, is necessary because the explosion that occurred on October 17, 2025, rendered the stairwell and affected apartments inaccessible and unsafe.

The explosion resulted in three deaths, including a pregnant woman, and left 15 people injured. The blast, centered around floors 5 and 6, severely compromised the building's structure, creating a high risk of collapse. Authorities from the State Inspectorate in Construction and the Emergency Situations Committee have prohibited entry into the building until the entire staircase is secured.

Following the incident, residents were evacuated, with the city providing hotel accommodations and later covering rent for families moved to rental apartments. A criminal investigation is ongoing, with three individuals previously detained as authorities expand their probe to include energy distributors and gas agents.
