Bucharest begins tramway modernization on Corneliu Coposu Boulevard
Modernization works have commenced on the tramway lines in Bucharest, specifically targeting Lot 1, which is described as the largest and most complex part of the modernization project. On Corneliu Coposu Boulevard, crews have begun dismantling old tracks between Calea Călărașilor and the Sfânta Vineri terminal.
The project aims to connect the existing terminal infrastructure with a new line that will cross Piața Unirii to reach the 11 Iunie – Rahova area. This new infrastructure will provide a direct link between the southwest and northeast of the city, connecting tram lines 32 and 21.
The total investment for this project exceeds 58 million euros (approximately 1 billion lei) and includes the construction of 1.26 kilometers of double track, platform extensions at the Piața Unirii terminal, and new platforms at the Sfânta Vineri intersection. The project is a partnership between the Bucharest City Hall and the Sector 4 City Hall, with the latter coordinating the implementation. While the execution is estimated to take 18 months, the timeline is subject to other major regional projects, such as the consolidation of the Unirii Platform.
