Bucharest heating system faces long-term vulnerabilities

Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu has warned that the capital's heating and hot water supply system remains highly vulnerable due to aging infrastructure. He stated that residents should expect continued service disruptions for the next 15 to 20 years, noting that the network has exceeded its lifespan and modernization is a long-term process.

As part of ongoing rehabilitation projects funded by the state and the European Union, Termoenergetica București will suspend thermal agent supply in Sector 4 from October 26 to October 30. The works, located on Bulevardul Constantin Brâncoveanu, involve connecting modernized pipes to the existing network and replacing an underground chamber. This intervention will affect approximately 166 apartment blocks served by 17 thermal points, impacting areas including Strada Secuilor, Șoseaua Olteniței, and Calea Șerban Vodă.

While the current system is approximately 94% functional, the Mayor highlighted that sectors 3 and 4 face higher risks due to delayed intervention permits. Despite these systemic challenges, officials indicated that heating and hot water bills are expected to remain unchanged for the upcoming winter.
