Bucharest-Ilfov region achieves 100% municipal waste treatment

The Bucharest-Ilfov region has reached a new milestone in waste management, with 100% of municipal waste being treated before disposal as of May 1. Currently, 55% of the total waste volume is diverted from landfills.

This shift is supported by an integrated regional infrastructure consisting of three major facilities: CMID Vidra (operated by Eco Sud SA) with a capacity of 920,000 tons per year, Iridex with 260,000 tons per year, and Romwaste with 328,000 tons per year. The combined capacity of 1,547,520 tons per year exceeds the region's estimated annual requirement of 1.2 million tons.

Under this model, mixed municipal waste undergoes mechanical-biological treatment and material recovery. Landfills, such as the Vidra site, now exclusively receive sorting rejects, treatment rejects, and the CLO fraction, serving as the final stage of a complex industrial process rather than the primary destination.
