Bucharest launches first smart pedestrian crossing

Bucharest City Hall has launched its first smart pedestrian crossing as a pilot project on Chitilei Road, at the intersection with Prahovei Street. The system is designed to enhance pedestrian safety by addressing the issue of driver desensitization to constantly flashing lights.

The technology utilizes a three-layer detection system. Intelligent sensors analyze movement to determine if a person intends to cross, ensuring the signal only activates when necessary rather than when someone simply walks past the crossing. Once an intention to cross is detected, dynamic visual signaling—including flash lamps and smart LED road lighting—activates to immediately alert drivers.

To assist visually impaired pedestrians, the system includes integrated acoustic signals and tactile markings. This pilot project will allow the municipality to test how the technology performs within Bucharest's traffic flow and how drivers react to the dynamic signaling.
