Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu Defends Policies Amid Election Talk and Lifestyle Scrutiny

Ciprian Ciucu, mayor of Bucharest and vice‑president of the PNL, said a possible early parliamentary election could give the country a functional government and a parliamentary majority capable of supporting the executive. He noted that a coalition between PSD and AUR might be considered if they together bring down the current cabinet.

Ciucu also addressed criticism over the large number of construction sites in the capital, confirming that about 50 projects are underway but no new sites will be opened this year. He argued the works are necessary for modernising the city’s heating network, tram lines and roads and urged residents to accept short‑term disruption for long‑term benefit.

On personal matters, Ciucu defended his modest lifestyle, stating he lives in an ordinary three‑room apartment for which he still pays a mortgage, uses a driver for safety during office hours, and even rides the elevator with delivery couriers. He denied any corruption, rejecting DNA allegations of accepting bribes for building permits.

He also rebutted Moldovan mayor Ion Ceban’s claim that Ceban learned of Adrian Veștea’s prime‑minister nomination before PNL leaders, calling the accusation unfounded. Ciucu described the political “system” as a poliarchy rather than a single‑person rule.
