Ciprian Ciucu placed under judicial control amid PNL legal fight over Congress

Bucharest mayor Ciprian Ciucu was placed under judicial control for 60 days in a DNA investigation that accuses him of taking bribes while he was mayor of Sector 6. Prosecutors say he received campaign‑related publicity and consulting services in exchange for urbanism certificates and building permits. Ciucu denies the allegations and says he will cooperate with the investigators.

Following the move, the Social Democratic Party demanded that the National Liberal Party (PNL) suspend Ciucu from all party functions and withdraw political support for his mayoral mandate. Within the PNL, the anti‑Bolojan faction – often called the “puciști” – filed urgent applications at the Ilfov Tribunal seeking to suspend the party’s National Political Bureau decisions that convened an extraordinary National Council (19 June) and an extraordinary Congress (21 June). The group also asks the court to award 4 million lei in moral damages, arguing the decisions were intended to alter the party statute and expel dissenting members.

Several PNL figures publicly defended Ciucu. Deputy Prime Minister Cătălin Drulă said he does not consider Ciucu a corrupt person, while MEP Daniel Buda rejected claims of political interference and emphasized the presumption of innocence.
