Moldova to modernize irrigation systems in 130 million euro project

The Moldovan government has approved a loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to fund the 'Moldova – Sustainable Water Supply (Irrigation)' project. The initiative is estimated to cost approximately 130 million euros.

The project aims to modernize centralized irrigation systems to support roughly 6,900 hectares of agricultural land, enhancing resilience against drought and climate change. Funding will be provided through a combination of loans and grants from the EBRD and the European Union via the Reform and Growth Facility for Moldova.

The first phase focuses on rehabilitating the 'Masivul Căușeni' system in the Ștefan Vodă district, which serves 2,000 hectares. Following modernization, management will be transferred to the 'Kîzîl' Water Users Association. The second phase targets the 'Puhăcenii de Sus' system in the Criuleni and Anenii Noi districts, covering 4,900 hectares, to be managed by the 'Dubăsarii Vechi' and 'Aqua Terra Delacău' associations. Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Eugeniu Osmochescu noted that 300 private sector farmers will contribute 3% to the financing.
