Romania's transport projects face delays and new upgrades across roads, rail and metro

Several major transport infrastructure works in Romania are progressing unevenly.

The DN2‑A2 sector of the Bucharest ring road remains at just 10.98% physical completion, with major obstacles including land‑owner refusals, unexpected utilities and terrain issues; the deadline is now late 2028.

Rail upgrades on the Caransebeș‑Arad line show mixed progress: the Lugoj‑Timișoara East section is 76.3% complete, while Caransebeș‑Lugoj lags at 13.0%. The project will allow 160 km/h speeds and adds new stations and ERTMS Level 2 signalling.

Works on Bucharest’s Metro Line 6 (Magistrala 6) linking the city to Henri Coandă Airport have slipped to a projected completion of 9 Nov 2028 after discoveries of undocumented underground utilities and delayed tunnel‑boring machines; traffic restrictions on DN1 and major boulevards will continue for at least two more years.

The A0 Nord ring‑road’s Lot 1 has reached about 68% physical work, but CNAIR urges acceleration to meet the April 2027 deadline.

Sector 1 plans to acquire private land for a new residential parking facility, pending council approval.

In Iași, a one‑year tram‑track renewal on the Copou line, funded by the 2021‑2027 regional program, is set to start in early August, costing roughly €17 million.
