Bucharest police investigate bus drivers for fuel theft

Police in Bucharest are investigating ten bus drivers employed by the Bucharest Transport Company (STB) on suspicion of theft and complicity in theft. The investigation, launched in August 2026, concerns the theft of considerable quantities of diesel fuel from bus tanks.

Authorities allege the fuel was taken both during working hours and at night between June 23 and September 30, 2026, primarily at a worksite in Sector 5. The investigation also suggests that on one occasion in August, a driver received assistance from two security guards to facilitate the theft.

On October 28, 2026, police executed ten search warrants and ten summonses across Bucharest, Ilfov, and Giurgiu counties to gather evidence. STB, which is owned by the Bucharest City Hall, has been facing insolvency due to ongoing financial losses.
