Bucharest Police investigate elderly medical device fraud

Five individuals are under investigation by the Bucharest Police for allegedly defrauding elderly citizens through medical scams. Between July 2025 and September 2026, the suspects reportedly operated through commercial entities presented as health centers.

Investigators claim the suspects attracted victims by offering free health assessments under the guise of accessing specialized health program funds. Following these assessments, suspects allegedly exaggerated the severity of existing medical conditions to convince victims to purchase various medical devices at prices significantly higher than their market value.

In many instances, victims were persuaded to finance these purchases through personal loans. Police report that employees sometimes accompanied the elderly to banks to obtain funds, or signed credit contracts directly on the victims' mobile terminals with their consent. Following five home searches, the suspects were taken in for questioning.
