Bucharest protest violence leads to multiple arrests and criminal charges
Authorities have launched criminal proceedings against multiple individuals following violent clashes during an animal breeders' protest at Piața Victoriei in Bucharest on September 15. Prosecutors from the Bucharest Tribunal have initiated legal action against 20 people, with 10 facing proposals for preventive arrest.
Among those detained are members of the AUR political party, including Auraș Andone and Valentin Stoica. Charges include outrage against public officials, disturbing public order, and destruction. Investigations involved 29 search warrants across various Romanian counties, including Bucharest, Cluj, and Călărași.
One specific individual, a shepherd from Cluj, has been placed under 30-day preventive arrest after allegedly using a club against gendarmes. While the head of the Professional Association of Shepherds claims the man found the object on the ground, surveillance footage reportedly shows him holding the club during the confrontations. Other suspects are being investigated for the assault of journalists during the unrest.
