Bucharest ranks among Europe's most congested capitals
Bucharest has been ranked as the 5th most congested capital in Europe and 20th globally, according to the 2025 TomTom Traffic Index. On average, drivers in the Romanian capital lose approximately 171 hours per year to peak-hour traffic.
Local residents have sparked intense debate on social media regarding the causes of these delays. Many citizens claim that traffic congestion is significantly exacerbated on school days by parents driving children to educational institutions, even when the schools are within walking distance. Some residents suggest that between 100,000 and 200,000 vehicles enter the roads during school hours, contributing to the gridlock.
Proposed solutions to address the issue include implementing dedicated lanes, utilizing school buses, or adjusting school start times. Other contributing factors mentioned include the lack of neighborhood schools in new residential developments and general urban infrastructure challenges.
