Bucharest to phase out polluting vehicles starting 2027

Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Ciucu has announced plans to implement a phased restriction on polluting vehicles in the capital between 2027 and 2032. The initiative aims to establish a Low Emission Zone (LEZ), starting in the central area before expanding city-wide. The plan targets the gradual removal of older vehicles, moving from non-Euro standards up to Euro 5 compliance.

Data indicates that of the approximately 2.9 million vehicles registered in Bucharest and Ilfov, nearly 1.3 million are considered old and polluting. This includes roughly 460,000 vehicles aged 22 to 35 years (non-Euro, Euro 1, 2, and 3) and about 835,000 vehicles aged 17 to 21 years (Euro 4).

During recent debates involving environmental and health authorities, officials emphasized the necessity of regional cooperation. Mayor Ciucu noted that effective pollution and transport policies cannot succeed without the involvement of neighboring Ilfov County, as air pollution and commuter mobility transcend administrative borders. The Prefect of Bucharest also highlighted that environmental issues in Ilfov directly impact the capital's air quality.
