Bucharest urban planners propose pedestrian and micro-space improvements
Urban planners and architects are addressing the challenges of pedestrian mobility and the utilization of micro-spaces in Bucharest. Mădălina Elena Toma, president of the Bucharest branch of the Order of Architects in Romania, highlights that the city currently lacks a balanced distribution of public space, noting that pedestrians often receive only the remaining space after traffic and parking needs are met. She advocates for a human-scale city with continuous, safe, and comfortable pedestrian routes.
Complementing this discussion, the study ‘Bucharest. Minor Structure, Volume 3 – Maidan’ explores how small urban spaces—such as intersections, street corners, and courtyards—can be leveraged to improve daily life. The study, presented by Studio BAAB and Baza, focuses on the historic area of Sector 2, proposing that these seemingly insignificant spaces can form a vital infrastructure for the community if improved through strategic urban design.
