Bucharest's Sector 2 Council Approves IVF Financial Support Program

The local council of Bucharest's Sector 2 will vote in an extraordinary session on 14 July to adopt a multiyear programme that provides financial assistance for in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF). Up to 20,000 lei per beneficiary will be issued as two non‑transferable vouchers – 5,000 lei for medication and 15,000 lei for medical procedures – usable only at participating pharmacies and clinics.

The scheme, running from 2026 to 2028, targets up to 50 eligible couples or single women each year. Applicants must have a stable residence in Sector 2 for at least one year, be insured under Romania's public health system, have no outstanding local taxes, fall within set income limits (maximum 11,400 lei net monthly for couples, 5,700 lei for single women) and be aged 24‑42. A beneficiary may receive support for up to three separate IVF cycles in a calendar year, provided earlier attempts were unsuccessful and documented by a specialist.

Funding of 1 million lei per year will come from the sector's budget, reflecting the broader context that “approximately one in six people worldwide faces infertility” and that over 17 % of Romanian couples experience difficulty conceiving.
