Buchenwald Memorial Association launches website for concentration camp subcamps

The Buchenwald Memorial Association has launched a new website to document and connect the memory of more than 140 subcamps that were part of the Buchenwald concentration camp system. The project, titled ‘Buchenwald was everywhere’, utilizes an interactive map to make these historical sites visible, including memorials, city archives, and local civil society initiatives.

Research by the association indicates that many of these sites lack formal memorials, with only 48 of the approximately 140 former locations featuring plaques or monuments. Many of these subcamps were established by the SS to provide forced labor for the armaments industry, often located in close proximity to the companies utilizing the prisoners.

Historian János Varga noted that the system of subcamps serves as evidence that the realities of the Nazi camp system were often known to local populations and businesses. The association aims to prevent these sites of historical crimes from being forgotten or built over, encouraging volunteers to maintain remembrance efforts where formal monuments do not exist.
