Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Mahler and Eötvös
The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra will hold its 339th regular concert, titled ‘The Beginning’, on September 11 at the Bucheon Arts Center Concert Hall. Conducted by resident conductor Adrien Perruchon, the performance features a program that blends modern experimentalism with large-scale symphonic works.
The concert will open with Péter Eötvös’s ‘Speaking Drums’, featuring percussionist Park Hye-ji. The piece is noted for integrating human voices, physical movement, and linguistic rhythms, treating percussion as a communicative subject rather than a mere rhythmic instrument.
The second half of the program will feature Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, ‘Titan’. This selection holds historical significance for the orchestra, as the Bucheon Philharmonic was the first in South Korea to complete a full cycle of Mahler’s symphonies between 1999 and 2003. This performance returns to the work that served as the starting point of that landmark musical achievement.
