Buckland Abbey gardeners grow 22-pound cabbage
Gardeners at Buckland Abbey in Devon have grown a massive cabbage, named ‘Cornish Giant’, which measures 1.2 meters in diameter and weighs over 22 pounds. The vegetable was large enough to overflow the estate's largest wheelbarrow.
The cabbage won a competition among National Trust gardeners in Cornwall and the Tamar Valley. Senior gardener Sam Brown noted that the cabbage was part of a successful harvest that included pumpkins and squashes, which thrived despite a warm, dry summer.
The giant cabbages are intended for donation to local animal charities. Visitors can view the seasonal displays, including sea-monster-themed pumpkin decorations, during the abbey's Harvest Weekend on October 24 and 25.
