Budapest advertising market faces major shift due to billboard regulations

Proposed advertising regulations in Hungary, particularly in Budapest, are expected to drastically reshape the outdoor advertising market. Following a June law that banned political advertisements capable of inciting hatred and billboards exceeding 16 square meters, a new draft government decree could further reduce available advertising surfaces.

According to assessments by the Outdoor Advertising Division of the Hungarian Advertising Association (MRSZ), approximately 90 percent of Budapest's current large-scale billboards could disappear. Of the roughly 8,500 existing large billboards in the capital, only about 780 might remain under the new rules.

This regulatory shift is expected to benefit major market players. The French company JCDecaux and the Hungarian firm Publimont are positioned to dominate the remaining market. Estimates suggest that JCDecaux and Publimont could together control nearly 90 percent of the Budapest outdoor advertising market, with JCDecaux holding a 46 percent share and Publimont approximately 38 percent based on the number of surfaces.
