Budapest airport to connect via rail to Oradea and Arad
As part of Hungary’s 8.8 billion euro Baross Gábor railway development program, plans are underway to establish direct rail connections between Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport and major cities in eastern Hungary and Romania.
In an interview with Club Feroviar, Hungarian Minister of Transport and Investments Dávid Vitézy identified the Romanian cities of Oradea and Arad as primary beneficiaries of this long-term plan. The project aims to integrate the airport into the wider rail network, allowing trains to travel through the airport toward Romania rather than terminating in central Budapest.
The broader modernization program includes upgrading infrastructure and stations, reducing speed restrictions, and purchasing new rolling stock, such as at least 35 new air-conditioned electric InterCity trains. While the strategic goals are outlined, no specific timeline has been set for the commencement of construction or the launch of direct services to Oradea and Arad.
