Lake Balaton water levels reach historic lows amid climate shifts
Lake Balaton is facing significant water level challenges, with levels in early October 2026 reaching approximately 29 centimeters. This figure approaches the historical minimum of 23 centimeters recorded in 2003.
Meteorological analysis by Péter Szabó from ELTE indicates that the current situation is not merely the result of a single dry summer, but a consequence of accumulated water deficits over consecutive years. A critical shift has occurred in the seasonal water balance: while winter water surpluses previously offset summer deficits, rising temperatures and increased evaporation rates mean that average winter precipitation is no longer sufficient to replenish the lake.
Research into the lake's catchment area shows that in 16 of the last 26 years, the annual water balance was negative. While experts suggest the lake is not at risk of disappearing within the next 15 years, models from the Balaton Limnological Research Institute indicate that by 2040, artificial water replenishment may be necessary during multi-year droughts.
