German authorities arrest suspect in 2023 Budapest attacks

The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has arrested an Albanian national, Rexhino A., in connection with violent attacks that occurred in Budapest in February 2023. The suspect voluntarily surrendered to police in Hannover.

He is accused of membership in a criminal association and dangerous bodily harm. Prosecutors allege that during the ‘Day of Honor’ event in Budapest, the suspect and other members of a group known as the ‘Hammerbande’ (or ‘Antifa-Ost’) attacked individuals perceived to be from the right-wing political spectrum using pepper spray, batons, and a hammer.

The suspect’s legal representative stated that he surrendered in hopes of a fair trial in Germany. The German authorities have indicated that extradition to Hungary will no longer be considered, and the criminal proceedings will instead take place in Germany. The suspect is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe to determine pre-trial detention.
