Budapest Biodome City Oasis Opens to Public

On July 4 2026 the Budapest City Zoo unveiled the Biodome’s new “City Oasis”, a public space displaying tropical and subtropical plants alongside exotic animals such as hulmans, Bali sergeants and spiny‑tailed turtles. Zoo director Endre Sós, Environment Minister László Gajdos and Mayor Gergely Karácsony highlighted the project’s role in environmental education and animal welfare.

Construction of the Biodome began in 2018, was delayed beyond its original 2021 target, and finally opened its doors in 2024. The recent Oasis opening follows extensive refurbishment and the addition of outdoor enclosures completed in August 2024, as well as the BeporZoona pollinator garden inaugurated in April 2026. The investment totalled roughly 38 billion forints, with a recent 350 million‑forint upgrade funded largely (300 million) from the zoo’s own revenue.

Since December 2023, more than 311 000 visitors have attended programs in the Biodome area, including festivals, art exhibitions and seasonal fossil displays, matching the average attendance of a medium‑sized Hungarian zoo.
