Budapest: Diákváros project restarts amid local political tensions
The Diákváros project is being restarted following a period of stagnation. Previously, the development of the area was halted due to plans to build Fudan University, a project involving Chinese interests that failed prior to the change in government. The site has since returned to state ownership.
Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy announced the relaunch, noting that the project aims to address the growing shortage of dormitory spaces and alleviate the housing crisis in Budapest.
Separately, political tensions have escalated between Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony and several district mayors. Eight district leaders issued a joint statement criticizing the Mayor for agreeing to a centralized parking system that would divert revenue from districts to the capital. District leaders, including Krisztina Baranyi and András Pikó, argue that this loss of funding threatens local services such as cleanliness, public safety, kindergartens, and elderly care.
