Budapest dims monument lights to save energy amid heat wave

Budapest has switched off decorative lighting at the Parliament building, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge as part of an emergency energy‑saving plan during an intense heat wave with temperatures reaching 40‑42 °C. The measure follows a prolonged heat spell and record‑low Danube water levels that forced the country to run its sole nuclear plant at minimal capacity.

Most residents welcomed the step, while some tourists expressed disappointment, including German visitor Silke Schnaiters who said she had come to see the illuminated landmarks. Similar lighting reductions were reported in Bucharest and other cities across the region, with street lighting dimmed by a third and monuments left dark.

The action reflects the Hungarian government's call to ease pressure on the power grid and highlights the broader challenges of coping with extreme weather and energy shortages.
