Budapest District II Mayor Gergely Őrsi detained in Óbuda corruption investigation

Budapest’s District II mayor, Gergely Őrsi, was taken into police custody as part of a widening corruption probe into the Óbuda district. The Central Prosecutor’s Office conducted simultaneous raids on the mayor’s office, his residence, and other locations linked to the case, seizing documents and detaining several officials.

The investigation centres on alleged fictitious and over‑priced contracts awarded by the Óbuda municipal administration to a group of companies, including RF Production Hungary, Key Price, Atlas Hill, BudaMédia, and Mahir Cityposter. Prosecutors allege that payments from these contracts were funneled back to municipal officials as kick‑backs. Other district officials, such as former mayor‑candidates Kiss László and Czeglédy Gergő, were previously arrested, released, and now face renewed scrutiny.

Authorities have not disclosed the full extent of the evidence, but the probe is expected to expand to additional Budapest districts. The mayor’s legal representatives stress the principle of presumption of innocence until a court renders a verdict.
