Budapest district mayors demand reversal of parking reform

Seven mayors from Budapest districts have issued a joint statement demanding the withdrawal of a decision to restructure the city's parking system. The mayors argue that the costs associated with creating a unified parking system cannot be covered by district operating budgets without jeopardizing essential public services.

In response to the conflict, the mayors are initiating the revival of the Association of Budapest Municipalities (BÖSZ), an organization that has been largely inactive for nearly three years. They plan to hold an extraordinary meeting on October 26 to establish new leadership and implement organizational reforms aimed at improving public services and addressing municipal financial burdens.

The district leaders accused Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony of undermining cooperation between the capital and the districts through his approach to the parking reform, claiming his actions threaten the city's functionality. They emphasized that the needs of Budapest residents can only be met through close cooperation between the metropolitan and district governments.
