Budapest district proposes ban on short-term rentals in Buda Castle
The Buda Castle Municipality has announced a draft regulation that could lead to a total ban on short-term apartment rentals within the Buda Castle district, effective January 1, 2028. The proposal follows a local referendum where 58.6% of respondents supported a ban, with support reaching 66% specifically within the Castle district.
Under the proposed rules, existing accommodations registered by December 31, 2026, would be permitted to operate until the end of 2027 to allow for a transition period. In other parts of the district, apartment-based accommodations would require the consent of the homeowners' association to continue operating from 2028 onwards.
The municipality aims to protect the residential function of the area and the peace of its inhabitants. To ensure compliance, the district plans to introduce stricter monitoring and significant fines. Violations could result in fines of 200,000 HUF for individuals and entrepreneurs, as well as temporary 45-day closures of the accommodation.
