Budapest districts clash over proposed parking revenue redistribution
A conflict has emerged between the Budapest municipal leadership and district governments regarding a planned redistribution of parking revenues. Krisztina Baranyi, the mayor of Ferencváros, has accused Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony of reaching an agreement with the national government without consulting the districts. Baranyi claims the city is attempting to alleviate its own financial deficits at the expense of district budgets, which could jeopardize local services and planned developments.
Baranyi argues that the city's justification for restructuring the system—based on high operating costs of district parking—is based on flawed data. She contends that the city is misinterpreting the costs of scattered, city-owned parking spaces compared to the more efficient, dense systems managed by districts.
In Óbuda-Békásmegyer, Mayor László Kiss has called for the preservation of parking benefits for local residents and the continued funding of road renovations. While acknowledging that a unified Budapest parking system has been a long-term goal, Kiss emphasized that the details of the government-city agreement remain unclear. He has requested clarification from the Prime Minister to ensure that changes do not compromise the district's ability to maintain local infrastructure and road networks.
