Budapest districts initiate mandatory dog registration

Multiple districts in Budapest are conducting mandatory dog registration censuses to maintain records of pets and owners, prevent rabies, and ensure animal welfare and public safety.

In Józsefváros (District VIII), the registration period runs from October 1 to December 1, 2026. Owners must submit a separate data sheet for each dog, even if the animal was previously registered or if no information has changed. Failure to comply with this legal obligation may result in penalties.

Other districts are also conducting similar processes: District VI ends on October 30, while Districts III and XV conclude on October 31. In District XV, non-compliance or improper data submission can lead to a fine of 150,000 HUF. District XIII has until December 31 to complete its registration. The Óbuda municipality has also noted that owners must submit signed forms for every dog, including those lost since the last census.
