Budapest expands CAF low‑floor tram fleet with two new vehicles

Budapest's public‑transport authority (BKK) has placed two new CAF low‑floor trams, numbered 36 and 37, into service. The vehicles are part of a 51‑tram order that is being delivered continuously, raising the share of low‑floor trams in the city to over 40 %. The fleet expansion will increase capacity on lines 1, 3, 17, 19, 42, 50, 56, 56A and 61, and by the end of January the 3 and 42 lines will be operated exclusively by CAF trams. Further deployments are planned for lines 2, 23, 24, 62, 14 and 69, while feasibility studies are under way for lines 47 and 49. The rollout requires associated infrastructure upgrades, including power‑supply improvements and depot expansions. The procurement is financed by European Union aid and state co‑funding, amounting to a non‑refundable grant of 54.15 billion forints.
