Budapest faces financial strain amid funding disputes
Budapest is facing a severe financial crisis as Mayor Gergely Karácsony navigates significant funding gaps and debt management. To maintain liquidity, the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has rescheduled 9 billion HUF in payments to ArrivaBus, postponing certain invoices from late 2026 to March 2027.
Karácsony highlighted that the city has not received its 12 billion HUF state norm for public transport this year and faces an estimated 50 billion HUF loss due to ongoing legal disputes regarding solidarity contributions. The Mayor warned that there is no contingency plan if a financial agreement with the national government is not reached by October.
In a separate matter, Karácsony defended the professionalism of Budapest's public transport workers following derogatory comments made by a radio host regarding the expertise of staff in the municipal transport sector.
