Hungary is planning a significant shift in its energy policy, aiming to end its dependence on Russian natural gas by October 2027. Economy and Energy Minister István Kapitány stated that the country possesses the necessary pipeline infrastructure to source gas from alternative providers at competitive prices. This move aligns with European Union goals to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

To facilitate this transition, Budapest is negotiating with Croatia to utilize the full capacity of the Adria pipeline for oil and gas imports. The government is also reviewing the Paks II nuclear expansion project, with a final decision expected by the end of the year. Simultaneously, officials are exploring extending the operational life of the Paks I plant for an additional 20 years beyond 2032.

Regarding renewable energy, Hungary’s solar capacity has surpassed 8,000 megawatts. However, the minister noted a critical need to expand energy storage capacity to support the growing share of solar and wind power. The government intends to prioritize storage development and energy efficiency to stabilize the grid and reduce long-term import exposure.
