Budapest Fine Arts University opens Alajos Strobl exhibition with 3D‑printed golden statue
The Hungarian University of Fine Arts on Andrássy út is hosting the exhibition “The Source of Immortality – Alajos Strobl (1856‑1926)”. A life‑size golden 3D‑printed figure of the sculptor, named Mihály, stands on the university’s steps. The statue is a digital reconstruction of the original 1913 Mechwart monument figure that survived World War II; it was measured, modelled and printed in 48 parts using six printers within two weeks.
The exhibition, open daily Tuesday‑Saturday until 19 September with free admission, showcases over 45 works by Strobl, including pieces that were long thought lost. Visitors can see photographs, small plaster models and the artist’s major public monuments such as the Saint Stephen equestrian statue and the Mátyás‑well. The display highlights Strobl’s career from his studies in Vienna to his prolific commissions in Budapest, underscoring his lasting influence on Hungarian sculpture.
