Budapest Influencer Trip costs 3.18 billion forints, double initial estimates

Hungarian authorities and media have uncovered significant discrepancies regarding the 2024 Budapest Influencer Trip. While the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) initially reported the campaign cost at 1.5 billion forints, newly released documents obtained through public information requests reveal the total net cost was actually 3.1809 billion forints. Approximately 1.4789 billion forints of this total was spent on media purchasing across influencer platforms.

The campaign, which aimed to promote Budapest to Generation Z, was linked to the tourism concepts of Ráhel Orbán, daughter of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The program involved approximately 50 international influencers and 100 domestic creators participating in exclusive events, such as brunches at the Párisi Udvar Hotel and parties at the Fisherman's Bastion.

Investigations also suggest that some event locations and accommodations were connected to business circles associated with István Tiborcz. Additionally, the leadership of the public media (MTVA) is filing a report and seeking legal action against Attila Várhegyi. Várhegyi, a communications consultant, is accused of exercising unauthorized control over the institution's decision-making processes, including editorial, personnel, and economic matters, effectively acting as an informal director.
