Budapest loses status as affordable European capital

Budapest is losing its status as one of Europe’s most affordable capital cities. According to international travel media and global press reports, the city is no longer considered a budget-friendly destination for tourists.

Factors contributing to this shift include high inflation rates between 2022 and 2024, which at times exceeded 25 percent, alongside rising service costs and fluctuations in the forint exchange rate. While major travel platforms like Lonely Planet and Condé Nast Traveler continue to recommend the city for its architecture and culture, practical cost guides now describe Budapest as ‘moderately priced’ rather than ‘cheap.’

Although travelers from Western Europe and North America may still find savings on premium services and accommodation compared to cities like London, Paris, or Vienna, the era of Budapest being an exceptionally low-cost destination has largely ended.
