Budapest Luxury Project Accused of Dumping Human Remains

During the construction of the Sylvan Residence luxury apartment complex on the former Víziváros military cemetery in Budapest, workers uncovered large quantities of human bones. According to a report, the excavated soil containing the remains was loaded onto trucks and taken to the Solymári, Szigetszentmiklósi and Csepeli waste‑landfill sites instead of being interred in a common grave as required by Hungarian law.

The developer, Bank Center Kft., which is owned by OTP Bank, says the work complies with current regulations and claims no knowledge of any illegal disposal. A former construction employee, however, told journalists that all parties on site were aware of the situation but that no one intervened. Legal experts note that the handling may constitute "kegyeletsértés" (disrespect of the dead), a criminal offense under the Hungarian Penal Code.
