Budapest man sentenced to prison for theft from sleeping victim

A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for stealing a mobile phone from a sleeping victim in Budapest. The incident occurred at Hősök tere in the XXIII district.

According to a statement from the Budapest Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office, the perpetrator observed the victim to ensure they were deeply asleep before taking the phone from under the victim's right hand. Public surveillance cameras captured the theft, allowing authorities to track the suspect's movements.

Public area inspectors monitored the suspect via camera and alerted the police. The man was subsequently apprehended by officers on a HÉV train heading toward Közvágóhíd. The stolen device was recovered and returned to the victim.
