Budapest Mayor expects financial agreement with government within weeks
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced that an agreement regarding the capital's financial issues is expected within weeks. During a meeting of the Budapest City Assembly, Karácsony stated that negotiations, which began at the ministerial and mayoral levels, are currently being conducted at the level of deputy state secretaries and experts.
The Mayor attributed the city's current financial difficulties to what he described as “law-testing, confiscatory state withdrawals of money” caused by previous legislation. He noted that the Constitutional Court has since ruled certain laws responsible for these conditions to be “unconstitutional.”
Karácsony expressed hope that the upcoming agreement will resolve issues through 2026 and prevent similar financial instability in the future. He also highlighted the potential for a significant development period driven by European Union funds, specifically targeting transportation, public space renewal, and housing.
