Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony seeks public debate on German occupation monument

Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced that Budapest will open a societal and professional discussion about the German occupation monument standing in Szabadság Square. He described the sculpture as a visual pollution and “forever false” because it suggests that Hungary was fine before the German occupation, ignoring the earlier adoption of anti‑Jewish laws and the Hungarian state’s role in the Holocaust. Karácsony tasked the Budapest Gallery’s outdoor‑art advisory council to lead the debate and said the final decision on whether the monument stays, is removed or receives a creative reinterpretation should be taken jointly by the city and the national government.

He also noted the “Eleven Memorial” project, where citizens place their family‑history plaques opposite the statue, and warned that removing the monument without a broader context could fuel extremist narratives.
