Budapest Mayor Karácsony declares end of anti‑city politics

Budapest Mayor Karácsony Gergely posted on Tuesday that the "era of anti‑Budapest politics" has ended. He highlighted a series of recent legal victories: the Supreme Court (Kúria) ruled that the city’s budget is legal and economically sound in a case brought by former chief prefect Sára Botond, and the Hungarian parliament repealed a controversial “aid loan” measure that the mayor described as a "usurious political construct."

Karácsony stressed that while the rulings do not automatically improve the city’s finances or expand municipal autonomy, they pave the way for a new agreement with the national government. He expressed optimism that an accord could be reached in the autumn, effectively ending the prior government's hostile stance toward Budapest.
